Mountain biking is a great way to see Colorado and its diverse landscape. This landlocked State, split in half by the Rockies has more than 8,000 kilometers of trails ranging from desert doubletrack to mellow singletrack, high mountain passes to aspen-lined Loops. Denver offers a mountain biking trail for all levels.

Colorado is home to so many great mountain bike trails, it can be difficult for riders to select a favourite. Here are some of our favorite trails for both beginners and experienced riders.

The White Ranch System

This fun trail network in Boulder is one of my favorite places to ride because it has some fascinating doubletrack and lots of singletrack. The trails are dry almost all the time and get a lot of sun, which makes for an enjoyable ride. Popular routes include ascending on the left hand side, which is doubletrack and then descending down the singletrack. There are also some single track cut off trails that connect to the sides of the larger loop.

Rustler's Loop offers easy climbs, and smooth descents to help beginners develop their skills and gain confidence. Often, a beginner will come across some difficult terrain. But with the signs indicating what to do if you encounter an obstacle, you'll feel confident to take on any trail.


Buffalo Creek is another great place to start because it has so much to offer. There are some short climbs which lead to downhills with excitement, and slickrock sections that will challenge you. The secluded circuit is great for an afternoon or night adventure. There are just enough technical sections to keep you engaged, without being too challenging.

Red Rocks Park & Amphitheater

Red Rocks natural amphitheater was hailed by many as the best in all of the world. This is due to the towering sandstone and its excellent acoustics. This amazing venue hosts concerts all year long.

Gunnison and Crested Butte

Gunnison is a lively college town and Crested butte is a hamlet in the mountains. Both have beautiful mountains and trails that will keep you occupied. The two towns are just an hour's drive away from the best mountain bike routes in the world. Both are fantastic for a getaway weekend and worth checking out.

The Colorado Trail is a renowned IMBA Epic that is one of most challenging bike routes around the world. It is recommended to plan ahead and choose your own route. The trail has 28 segments, which can be done in many different ways.
